Even a Worm 21 & 22
I love Minekura so so much. Have been on a total Minekura kick recently, plowing through both Saiyuki and Wild Adapter in Japanese, and Wednesday's issue of Zero Sum delivered pages and pages of jaw-dropping plot-stuff and squeeable character moments and - more now please?

Wait a month?

...the only reason that's not driving me more insane is that it'll be worth it - it's always worth it. Like this month. And last.

So! Even a Worm! I can't wait until I actually catch up and read the stuff between Saiyuki 9 and Reload 6, because I it's probably even better when you don't have big gaps in your plot, but! I know enough that it makes sense, and I've been reading the chapters and going "...!" over them every month.

Well, almost every month. Last month I was a bad fangirl, glanced at the chapter and decided it was short enough that I might as well wait until next chapter to sit down and do a full read-through with dictionaries and all.

Which is why I'm only now having giggle fits over Hakkai's "selling myself" comment. WTF MINEKURA! XD(I was totally looking for the author's note "PS - Send your doujinshi to this address.") Oh, Hakkai. ♥ That was a special, special moment indeed. Goku and Gojyo's expressions are priceless, but I can't even begin to imagine what must have shown in Hakkai's face at that moment, for them to react like they did. ...well, I can, a bit. It's beautiful and terrifying all at once.

And when read together, the "selling myself" followed by Gojyo and Goku selling fruits was just... I. I keep imagining them selling Hakkai. Because. I'm... yeah... I'd blame doujinshi, but I know I'm managing this just fine on my own. Including the pimp outfits. With canes. Yep. (It doesn't help that they did change clothes to be fruitsellers. Though Goku's quite adorable like that, I have to say.)

Speaking of clothes - Gojyo, dear? Next time you're dying of heatstroke in a desert, how about, you know, taking off your jacket...? Hakkai could stand to shed a few layers of clothes too, but it's the leather jacket that gets me.

It's hard to pick favourite moments in this latest chapter, and I still think the oh, PLOT!, is what got me most. But I have to mention the scene after the youkai girl tells them to keep up the good work, and Gojyo goes all grumbly about her personality, and how it reminds him of a certain monk. The way they all freeze up, and Hakkai and Goku just stare at him for a beat - lovely. Especially after they all pretend the moment never happened. The way it mirrors certain scenes in the Kamisama arc can't be an accident, and it packs a nice emotional punch, at the same time as it made me laugh.

Hm. Speaking of that moment - does this mean Gojyo is actually getting over being pissed at Sanzo or not? Because Gojyo isn't really the type to hold a grudge, I don't think. But, Sanzo did let them down, and now his absence is making Goku worried and upset, and Gojyo clearly doesn't like it when the monkey's depressed. Maybe... I think he'd probably just needs to punch Sanzo in the face, and then he'd be over it, but he needs Sanzo to be there for that to work. Again, rather like the others felt about his leaving them in Kamisama.

To the plot - yay, plot! And kind of insane huge plot developments, because - what does this mean? On a broader scale than just now, I mean, interesting as it will be to see what'll happen with the group split up in two warring villages.

For 15 volumes it's all been about stopping the Minus Wave that was driving youkai beserk. Now we find out - the insanity is just temporary. Then they snap back to something very much like sanity, except with the fun bonus that they now view humans as cattle. Food. But they're perfectly rational about it, and it's a hundred times more creepy than insane rampaging youkais. It's especially creepy in the context of the three of them being reassured they'll experience the "rebirth" soon enough, since they're youkai. That they'll discover their "true forms", and Goku's reaction - if that's true, then what is his current form, really?

Un-plot relatedly, I've really loved Goku in these two chapters. He's maturing. He's worring about Sanzo eating and drinking properly (which almost slayed me with the cute of it), and when he noticed his silence was affecting the others, he did his best to cheer up, to make them feel better. Like with the mahjong in the Kamisama arc, if things are bad and he can see a way to fix some of it, he does. And then... there's such a weight to his thoughts, wondering about this change affecting the youkais.

And I wonder too, because - was this the point of the experiments all along? I seem to recall Nii saying they had brought on the youkai madness on purpose, which is fine for someone with plain destruction as their goal, but this - if this is what they were after? Youkai who are rational and intelligent and not just willing to kill humans, but actually feel like predators where humans are concerned? And the Minus Wave always struck me as sort of reversable - stop whatever's causing the mental flip to switch in the youkai, and they'll recover. Now...? They're not raging mad any more. They're quite sane, switch flipped back already. Except now they're about as interested in co-existing with humans as most humans are in co-existing with hamburgers. And it doesn't seem to me like that's something's that's going to change just by making the revival experiments stop...

There's the "youkai rebirth" thing, and there's UKOKU. Of course there's Ukoku. Cold and dark like a desert night indeed... There's always been Ukoku, and he's been lurking around now and then for ages, but - not when Sanzo was looking for him, not close like this with them aware of his possible presence. So, Ukoku, and youkai who've ridden out the Minus Wave, and - I'm wondering, is it possible that they're actually not that far away from Gyuumaou's castle? Not close, exactly, but no longer impossibly far away? Since the villagers know about Kougaiji and all... And again, serious plot and angst and then sudden fit of laughter. This time because - Kougaiji fangirl. I love it. It's beautiful. I wonder if she has doujinshi?

But Gojyo, Hakkai and Goku never were affected by the Minus Wave to begin with, right? So theoretically they'll never experience this "rebirth"-?

Well! That's an interesting take on it - hadn't thought about it like that at all!

The way I got it when reading was that - Minus Wave = Crazy Youkai -> Reborn Youkai. So first they go crazy, then they're "reborn".

Actually, thinking about it... there's nothing that says that some of the many random youkai we've seen come looking for the ikkou weren't "reborn" already. They were certainly not Minus Wave-crazy, as far as I can tell, since the actual crazy seems to be this berserk rampage where they soon lose all ability to control their sudden murderous impulses.

But, in the case of our boys - if they lost it to the Minus Wave, they wouldn't stay in a beserk stage forever. They'd snap out of it and be... "reborn". Is my take on it, but if it's something to do with different stages in the Minus Wave itself, then... yeah, they've been withstanding the effects, and so it's too late for them to get "reborn". Hmm.

And no matter how it actually works, they're still not normal youkai, and we've never seen what the Minus Wave would do to a halfblood, or a guy who was born human, or a creature of the earth...

And then there's Kougaiji and his gang, who are said to be not affected by the Minus Wave because they have "a stronger sense of self." What the hell is that supposed to mean? "Common" youkai don't have "a sense of self"?? It puzzles me...

Willpower does seem to play into how easily one gives in to the effects of the Minus Wave - Yakumo in Snow Drop clung to his sanity until his reason for living was gone, and then he snapped. And Kougaiji and the others have a lot of willpower, and a lot of reason for staying sane (each other).

At the same time, I've always assumed that Nii and the others would kind of like to avoid the total crazies in their own castle, and that the Wave is radiating out from them, leaving those in the center of it untouched by it. (Because while Kougaiji may be a strong-willed prince, Generic Guard #21 guarding the door to Nii's latest experiment isn't, and wouldn't it be very annoying for them to have their staff rampage at inopportune moments?)

An excellent point!

Maybe the fact that Kougaiji & Co. are at the same location that the Minus Wave is emanating from somehow protects them from its effects, like being in the eye of the storm. Maybe its effects get stronger the further away from its source it gets.

Yep, exactly - eye of the storm is just what I was looking for... And maybe it's stronger just outside the castle, but those inside it are (more or less) safe.

Hie! (I couldn't pronounce your name, so I'm afraid of trying to spell it)

I hope you can remember me!!! I'm May. We met in Osaka, for the Saiyuki play. I was with Kyle, my friend from England.

Hope it's okay to add you to my friend list =)

I hope you're still having a good time in Kyoto University. I'm dying to head over to Japan again as I had such a great time!

Take care.

Hi May! Of course I remember you! Using "Naye" is just fine - I'm a bit leery about having my real name about on the 'net, since it's rather uncommon...

And of course it's okay to add me! ♥

I'm still having a great time in Kyoto - don't know about the university bit, but Japan is a wonderful, wonderful place.

Hope life is treating you well in Korea, and thanks again for the chocolates - they were really delicious.
