Drum Mania!
I've finally cracked, and gone to a game center. And paid for games, not just walked about and looked at the shiny fun machines.

...it was fun. Lots and lots of fun. ^^;; And I'm SO glad I didn't get into the habit of doing this earlier in my stay, because - bye, bye, money, was nice having you!

It was great, though. Me and my brother (who is visiting for two weeks) and his friend (who came along on something like two weeks' notice!) were standing around the Drum Mania machine. For those who've never seen a game like that before, it's kind of like Pop'n'Music or DDR, only for drums. There's a screen which shows you when to hit the drum you've got in front of you with the drumsticks (and there are some variations to how you should hit it) to the song you pick. Simple and fun - even someone who's as computer game-illiterate as me can enjoy it!

But that wasn't the best bit. The best bit was the Japanese couple (our age, roughly) who stopped behind us to look, and thought it beyond awesome that these three gaijin were puzzling out how to use the game for what was clearly the first time. (It was for me - the other two had tried once before, but not gotten any of the instructions.) Us doing a song on "easy" was apparently the bestest thing ever, because they stood there cheering us on, and exlaiming about how good we were. (It was adorable. The "hit the drum in the middle" symbol was always marked with a "don", for the sound it makes when you hit it right, and they were going "Don, don -- don!" along to the rythm we were trying to drum along to.) Or at least how good my bro's friend was - I suck. Really, I do. It's fun, but I'm totally rusty on this kind of hand-eye coordination. ♥

When we were done, I told them it was the first time we played, and they exclaimed further over this, and this instigated a brief taking of pictures, because my brother and his friend are both very socially adept and forward, and the nice Japanese were only too happy to help. So we got their pictures, and then the woman offered to take a picture of the three of us playing/following the game, and more or less grabbed my brother's sizeable camera. It was such a fun and cute moment, and my brother thanked her in his best Japanese, and got a cheerful "dou itashimashite" (you're welcome), and then they wandered off and it was just... wow. Japan. Kyoto.

Have I mentioned recently how much I love Kyoto? ♥

気をつけて! You start by playing one Drum Mania credit and then you end spending all your nights at the ゲーセン... but such a good addiction ^_^'

You should definitely try the Taiko game. I don't really like Drum Mania (難し過ぎる!!) but Taiko is definitely the funniest rythmic game in the world. After DDR, of course.

「たいこ」って何?

It's a dangerous, dangerous addiction! Seriously. Dangerous.

Ha! Next time you're hanging out with kagenami, have her take you to play Tetsu no Taiko. It's lots of fun and I bet you'd enjoy it! :)

Everyone's telling me to try it now! I don't even know what it is, and I'd probably suck at it... but it'd still be fun to try.
